You might be wondering how can you “detox” at your desk? First things first, know that yoga doesn’t have to be confined to a mat or a hot room, just like you don’t have to be confined to the tight spaces at your desk.
Through five accessible yoga poses you can stretch off your physical and mental fatigue allowing you to focus on your tasks at hand. Anatomically speaking, sitting, hunching and slouching at your desk tightens the muscles on the front of the body and weakens the corresponding muscles on the back – something most aren’t aware of. Being confined to a desk chair might leave your back begging for a release. Take the next two minutes to tune into your breath and body to help prevent the end of the day aches and pains. Remember to keep your core engaged throughout your flow.
#1 Eagle Arms
Let go of all expectations of getting your hands to meet and focus on crossing at the elbows to release the shoulder tension. Lifting the elbows to 90 degrees helps stretch the back of the neck as well.
#2 Figure 4 Legs
Releases sciatic pain and opens up the hips, creating fresh new blood flow as you slowly unwind to your normal seat. Also aids in lengthening the psoas and groins.
#3 Side Bend
Lengthening the side body the feels cramped and crowded as you find yourself hunched over your keyboard creates room for more movement and releases tension from the muscles surrounding the spine.
#4 Cat and Cow
This pose is great for back mobility, tune into your exhalation to create more of a lift in your cat-like spine, deepens the stretch as you lift the shoulder blades to the ceiling.
# 5 Twists
Inhale to lengthen, exhale to twist deeper. Working for more spinal rotation as you twist is our goal. Be aware of your body and how it feels before you twist any deeper.
Yoga is meant to harvest and increase your bodies natural energy. Ditch the coffee, focus on your breath and reap the reward of our mini-flow. *Inhale / Exhale*. Repeat as necessary!
